Snowplow crews ahead of schedule

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Street Manager Galynn Huber says crews should have most of the city's roads cleared of snow by midnight.

Huber says crews benefited when the big snow stopped falling after midnight and the snow isn't as wet and heavy as originally forecast.

Huber says the stretch of warm, dry weather also allowed fleet mechanics to repair, replace and have all the machinery ready to go with the advent of this storm.

Huber says crews were able to plow emergency snow routes, streets around schools and get a jump on roads in Zone 3 where most of the city's residential streets are located.

Huber says he's going to wait until Monday morning to clear all the snow from downtown because there are so many events in town this weekend.  He says many visitors are staying downtown and they don't know the rules during a snow alert so he'll wait until their gone to get into the core.

He says crews are using snow gates and they are working much better than in the January snow, the city's last alert.  Officially at the airport just over 5 inches of snow fell in the storm.  There are heavier amount in southern Sioux Falls.

Huber reminds residents to not park on a street until it's plowed curb-to-curb or you'll risk getting ticketed and/or towed.
