SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KE,LO AM) - There are almost a dozen bills dealing with guns making their way through the South Dakota Legislature and Governor Dennis Daugaard feels the state has reasonable gun laws in place.
During yesterday's press briefing, Daugaard made public his feeling on allowing concealed guns in the Capitol building.
Daugaard said if the bill makes it to his desk "I would veto it, yes."
Daugaard says he's satisfied with the protection provided by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. He says others should not be allowed to carry guns in the Capitol. He says like a courtroom, the Capitol is sometimes a place where emotions run high.
He says it's good for people who are trained, "repetitiously trained," on managing dangerous situations to be the ones providing protection.
Daugaard quoted the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on concealed weapons permits who said "like most rights, the right secured by the second amendment is not unlimited." The Governor says Scalia "affirmed that concealed weapon's, permit laws are not an affront to our Second Amendment rights."
