SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley added an extra feature to the state's website offering details on the Drug Asset Forfeiture Program.
Jackley says the law provides for the seizure of a convicted drug offender's assets. It states that certain property can be seized if it's used for possession or distribution of controlled substances or marijuana.
A vehicle can be forfeited if it's used to conceal, transport or simply possess any illegal controlled substance or eight ounces, or more, of marijuana.
Jackley says the vehicles can either be utilized by law enforcement or can be sold and the proceeds are to be deposited into the drug control fund.
The drug control fund is used to enhance enforcement programs throughout South Dakota.
In the last fiscal year, 88 drug vehicle were seized with over $269,000 going to the control fund. Over $859,000 in drug money was seized and deposited in the fund.
Over $9,000 in equipment, paid for by the drug control fund in forfeiture grants, went to the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and Sioux Falls Police Department.
