PIERRE, SD (KELO.COM) A debate in the South Dakota State House of Representatives on whether to support an Article V convention of the states has caught the attention of conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin.
On his nationally broadcast show Wednesday night, Levin urged his South Dakota listeners to call their lawmakers to support the Article V convention and blasted the Concerned Women of America group for opposing the effort in Pierre.
"Concerned Women of America! Well, if they were concerned, they would be doing something different than what they're doing in South Dakota, I can tell you that," Levin said.
An Article V convention would allow the states to offer proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution on balancing the budget and other issues dear to the hearts of conservatives.
An Article V activist, David Schneider is in Pierre, lobbying hard. He says that Concerned Women of America and other conservative groups that oppose the convention, are giving into fear.
"They're scared. They believe what the Left has told them that this thing is going to runaway and take away their second amendment rights or their religious liberty," Schneider tells KELO Radio's Greg Belfrage Show. Schneider says it is "ludicrous" to think that the U.S. Congress will ever give up any of its power back to the states, so the a convention of the states is the only real way to get it done.
At least 34 states must call for the Article V convention before it can be convened.
