SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A package of measures related to South Dakota election law, and presented by Secretary of State Shantel Krebs, won approval in the House State Affairs Committee today.
Krebs wants legislators to relieve her office from obtaining pro and con statements for ballot question informational pamphlets printed for the public.
She says taxpayer money is spent on statements that have become political.
Krebs says her office would list the proponent's name, telephone number, mailing address and email address of each petition sponsor. The same would be done for the opposing party, so each individual, or constituent, would have the means to decipher the issue on their own.
She says her office printed 25,000 informational pamphlets, costing $8,200. After running out of the pamphlets, some county auditors had to made additional copies costing $6,200. She says the state is using taxpayer money to print and distribute something that has become politically charged.
She says in the last election, her office was flooded with calls from residents complaining about the statements.
Other sections the bill addressed provisions concerning elections and voting.
