SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO AM) - A measure to put a constitutional amendment on hunting and fishing before South Dakota voters failed in a House committee today.
Republican Representative David Lust of Rapid City says there's no need to put those protections in the constitution.
Lust says "we all know hunting is near and dear to the vast majority of South Dakotans. Farming is near and dear to the vast majority of South Dakotans, we don't have anything in our constitution on that."
The committee sent the measure to the 41st day effectively defeating the bill.
The measure was presented by first year Representative Drew Dennert, a Republican from Aberdeen.
It read "Hunting, fishing and trapping wildlife is a valued part of our heritage that shall forever be preserved for the people."
The bill wanted voters to have the final say on the amendment in the next general election.
