SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls new population estimate is 178,500 residents.
City Planner Jeff Schmitt says that's 5,200 more people over the last year. Since January 2000, Sioux Falls has seen a 54,300 person increase in its population.
Schmitt says the estimate is based on building permits, housing occupancy, the vacancy rate as well at the employment rate is in Sioux Falls. Schmitt says the unemployment rate is 2.3%.
Schmitt says Sioux Falls occupies 78 squre miles of land.
Demographics show 82.4% of Sioux Falls residents are Caucasion, 5.5% are Hispanic/Latino, 5.2% are African American, 2.1% are American Indian and 2% are Asian.
Sioux Falls School District demographics show 65.3% students are white and 34.7% are listed as minority.
49.5% of Sioux Falls residents are females and 50.5% are male. The median age is 34.6. The median household income is $53,802 with 23,174 residents live in poverty or close to 14% of Sioux Falls population..
