WASHINGTON, DC (KELO AM) President Trump nixing the Trans Pacific Partnership Trade Deal is a good thing says Doug Sombke with the South Dakota Farmer's Union.

Sombke says TPP does not properly address currency manipulation that would allow other nations to achieve unfair trade advantages over the U.S.

They weren't concentrating on fair trade, they were just concentrating on free trade and fair trade is a lot different than just free trade," Sombke explains. He says its sad to consider all the time and energy spent on TPP, but  not everything in it was good for the United States.

South Dakota U.S. Senator John Thune suggests it's time to start over.

“I look forward to working with the Trump administration to pursue new trade deals that open markets for South Dakota products, especially our agriculture products, and ensure that American producers have the ability to compete on a level playing field in the global marketplace.” says Senator Thune ina a statement released by his office.

South Dakota U.S. Senator Mike Rounds is also looking to the future.

He says, through his office, that  the new administration has said it will seek to negotiate better trade deals and he supports any effort that improves the ability to trade South Dakota goods and services around the World.

Congresswoman Kristi Noem also looks forward to something new on the drawing board.

"With 95 percent of the world’s consumers living outside the U.S., properly negotiated trade agreements can open new opportunities for American farmers, workers and families.  I look forward to working with the Trump administration on trade agreements....,"

TPP is a complicated trade agreement among twelve of the Pacific Rim countries, finalized after seven years of negotiation.
