SIOUX FALLS The House State Affairs Committee approved a measure supported by South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs to revise some procedures for filing, certifying and challenging petitions.
Krebs says the bill is the result of challenges to the petition process that went to court last year.
She says the measure defines what could not be brought to her office as a challenge and left only for the court.
Krebs says her officer was almost challenged to infinity this year.
She says for the eleven ballot measures that came to her office last year, there were 330,00 signatures. Her staff of 4 had to check 5% of signatures submitted.
Krebs says when petitions were challenged in court the staff had to go back and do them over and also check all the signatures
Krebs says the Secretary of State will notify the sponsors of a statewide ballot measure of the results by certified mail.
