SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO AM) If his young son can do it, then Sioux Falls City Councilor Pat Starr says all the city's volunteer boards conducting the people's business ought to be able to do it: roll the videotape.
Council this week voted to require the City's Parks and Recreation Board to record its meetings for public viewing. Starr hopes that board is just the first of many that will be brought into the 21st century.
"It was a good place, I think, for us the council to start and we'll continue to see more boards as we continue to purchase the technology they need," Starr tells KELO Radio's Greg Belfrage Show.
Next up, says Starr, is the Sioux Falls Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority. He says he is preparing a proposed ordinance to require REMSA to record meetings. The technology is a snap.
"When I met with the Remsa board in December, my nine-year-old recorded the part of the meeting where I was talking with the board about possibly recording their meeting," recalls Starr.
There has been push back from some city officials on this, including concerns that volunteers might be uncomfortable with the camera rolling.
