Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) - The owner/manager of a downtown bistro has announced he is running for Mayor of Sioux Falls. Nick Weiland, son of long-time Democratic activist Rick Weiland says he's running as an independent, pleding to "bridge the gap between left and right before it's too late" and "make America green again". Weiland has also served as a political consultant for his father's "People for Rick Weiland" group. His announcement came through a Facebook page. Weiland is so far, the first to announce his candidacy.
The Mayor's seat is not typically a partisan position, so it's curious as to the reason Weiland is announcing as an Independent. Mayor Huether, a previous declared Democrat, recently announced his move to an independent affiliation at a news conference. Huether's term ends in 2018.
