SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO AM) Groundbreaking for the City of Sioux Falls $22 million administration building is set for Monday, January 9, at 2 p.m.
Everyone's invited to the downtown Library for the warm part of the ceremony and then to cross North Dakota Avenue to watch a backhoe break into the likely frozen ground.
“The last time we celebrated something like this was way back in 1936. Serving Sioux Falls citizens is serious business, and our new City Administration Building will take us to a whole new level of performance,” says Mayor Mike Huether.
Proceeds from sales tax bonds sold in October will finance construction of the three-story building, designed to provide services to the growing population of Sioux Falls into the future. The project will also include a major facelift for rather shabby Van Eps Park.
The building project has not been without controversy. A citizen's group even tried to get it on the ballot, but the petitions were rejected by the city clerk because, essentially, the wrong form was used. Mayor Huether has repeatedly argued that the new building is a prudent use of tax dollars.
