Decisions to close wintry roads

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) When wintry weather hits, deciding to close any roads, let alone the interstate, is not taken lightly. Regional Operations Engineer Tom Horan says there are many factors that decide it.

Horan said that when high wind gusts tip over semi trucks or push them into the ditches or median, that is a road hazard for everyone, and with zero visiblity it may be too late to see them and stop in time.

While they do not want to make anyone's day worse they are making these decisions for the saftey of everyone on the road.

Horan said: "Once we get people stranded on the interstate and with the visiblity worsening, it is very difficult to get these people to safety."
