SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A West River lawmaker will introduce a bill that addresses a school district's ability to move from a five day school week to a four day school week.

Senate Minority Leader Billie Sutton of Burke says his bill would make it a referable decision by the school board, not the public.

Sutton says the Winner School District, in his legislative district, has some residents who were frustrated that they wanted to vote on a four or five day school week.

Sutton says the legislation is a compromise for the public and school board.

He says his bill gives the school board the option of referring the matter to a voter of the people.  He says the public still wouldn't be able to initiate that process, it would have to come from the school board.

He says there are many rumors about his bill.

One that he's heard is that itl would have a mandatory, statewide, five day school week and Sutton says that's not correct either.

The Department of Education says 34 of the 150 public schools in South Dakota use a four-day school week.
