SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Attorney General Marty Jackley says when he talks with South Dakotans, they can't believe vehicular homicide offenders get out with 50% of time served, let alone the instances where they serve only 30%.
Jackley says they believe a "sentence should be a sentence."
He says it's important to hold people accountable who do wrong and to have a law that will act as a better deterrent. He adds that a five year, maximum, actual sentence for killing somebody isn't enough.
Jackley says he's not proposing a mandatory minimum sentence for vehicular homicide.
He says vehicular homicide should be recognized, for parole purposes, as a violent crime. He says that means instead of getting out after serving 30% of your time, you have to serve at least half your time.
Jackley has other legislation he'll file.
That includes conflict legislation, positive work on the 24-7 sobriety program and fine tuning the victim notification system.
The legislature convenes January 10th.
