Armed robberies unrelated

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Police do not believe the recent rash of armed robberies are connected.

Sergeant Sean Kooistra says detectives thinks separate individuals are behind the wave of robberies.

Kooistra says there are times when police can determine the robber's intent or motive.  He says money for drugs is one reason criminals hold up convenience stores, casinos and banks.

He says there is not really a correlation in any of these recent cases.  Investigators haven't determined what the underlying purpose of the armed robberies, why they "feel that they need this money."

Kooistra says there is an uptick in armed robberies and that they tend to occur in waves, but again, investigators can't say what triggers the activity.

The latest armed robbery was Thanksgiving morning at the Golden Coin Casino on West Russell.
