Bolin moves to state senate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - After serving eight years in the South Dakota House, Jim Bolin of Canton won a seat in the state senate Tuesday.

Bolin won with 72% of the vote in the District 16 race.

Bolin says Union County, especially, is becoming more and more Republican.  He says it's one of the few counties in South Dakota where there's actually more Independents than Democrats.

Bolin anticipates a learning curve transitioning to the state senate.

He says the rule changes will be different.  He says there's no electronic voting like there is in the state house.  Votes in the state senate are audible, you call out your vote.

He says just by the nature of fewer lawmakers, there's a greater opportunity to be engaged in debates.

Bolin says in the senate you have greater opportunity to ask questions, especially in committee.  He also says the opportunity to evaluate bills, especially verbally, is enhanced

Bolin will aim to serve on the taxation and state affairs committees.
