SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Highs will warm into the mid-60's at the end of the week so the motivation for tomorrow's Winter Weather Preparedness Day may not be strong.

But Sioux Falls Forecaster Todd Heitkamp says this calm weather window is a great opportunity to be prepared for snow, wind and falling temperatures.

Heitkamp says just like severe spring and summer weather it's important to pay attention to the terms watch and warning.

If a winter storm watch is issued, it means hazardous winter weather is expected in the next 12 to 36 hours.  A winter storm warning means those conditions; six inches of snow, winds gusting to 35 or visibilities less than a quarter mile, are happening.

Heitkamp says if you are stranded in your car make sure you stay in the vehicle.  Open windows a little for fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

He says include an emergency kit in your vehicle with non-perishable food, blankets, flashlight, candles, a shovel, booster cables and tire chains.

If you are outside in sever winter weather dress in layers, wear heavy gloves and socks with boots that don't absorb water.

Heitkamp says listen to the forecase before departing ans postpone travel if the severe weather is occuring.  Inform others of your timetable and planned routes.  Remember the Donner Party.
