SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) - The USS South Dakota submarine scheduled to sail in 2017 took another step closer for launch.
The US Navy has approved the design for the official crest.
The crest includes Mt. Rushmore, pheasant feathers, coyotes, wheat and a sun shape originally used on the state's original flag.
Committee chairwoman and retired Navy Captain Debra Bodenstedt said, "I think the crest is an awesome representation of South Dakota’s fighting spirit, heritage and history. We couldn’t be happier with the final design.”
Several of the crew members, along with a wide variety of volunteers contributed to the design.
