SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The fourth annual home fire prevention canvass will focus on the Garfield neighborhood on Saturday.
Jennifer Ross with the American Red Cross say firefighters and volunteers will stop at a thousand homes checking for working smoke alarms and installing them where needed. Firefighters will install ten-year smoke alarms.
Ross says smoke alarms can cut the risk of death and injury by half. She says that simple task, of installing smoke alarms, can have a huge impact on household safety.
She says the outreach includes education about making your home a safer place. That includes reminders about safe cooking, not overloading outlets and keeping open flames away from curtains.
The Red Cross also encourages creating and practicing a home fire escape plan and consistant checking of smoke alarms.
Ross says the campaign also features free blood pressure checks.
Crews will be wearing a green badge when visiting homes. If Garfield neighbors aren't home on Saturday, or aren't in the canvassing area, they can visit getasmokealarm.org and set up an appointment.
