White Mass honors health care providers

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) - Bishop Paul J. Swain will celebrate the traditional White Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, noon, Tuesday, October 18.

The White Mass is an opportunity to pray and give thanks for the men and women who serve in the medical and healing professions.

The White Mass is named such because of the color traditionally worn by those in the healing profession of medicine.  It is celebrated this year in the Diocese of Sioux Falls on the feast day of St. Luke, believed to be a doctor himself, and who serves as the patron of patients, doctors, nurses, staff and all caregivers.

The Dioese says that while all are welcome, those who serve in these special professions are especially invited to attend.

The tradition of the White Mass dates back to the 1930s and the development of the Catholic Medical Association and has become an annual event in many dioceses around the country.
