SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The City of Sioux Falls is touting its improved score on the Human Rights Campaign's annual index of how cities treat their gay and transgender citizens.
Sioux Falls improved its score by 12 points to 40 out of a possible 100 on the Municipal Equality Index.
Assistant City Attorney Colleen Moran says Sioux Falls still has some work to do but she is thrilled that the city is becoming more inclusivie to all people, including the LGBTQ community.
The Index examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of the LGBTQ people who live and work there.
The city says Sioux Falls improved its score over last year, in part, because of its leadership’s public position on LGBTQ equality and its pro-equality legislative or policy efforts. The Municipal Equality Index also found that the City is a welcoming place to work.
Sioux Falls improved its score despite city officials earlier this year withdrawing a proposal to add gender identity and sexual orientation to the municipal anti-discrimination ordinance.
Brooking had the highest score of South Dakota cities at 50 on the Index. Others barely registered, such as Pierre with a score of only 12.
