A dangerous time in the country

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It's a busy time of year on gravel roads across South Dakota with hunters and farmers moving to and from fields.

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Jaspers says farmer are driving large, slow moving equipment but it's everybody's responsibility to be safe on roads.

Japers says combines and other large pieces of farm equipment should have a slow moving display on back or blinking lights or both.  He says often a farmer will pull over to allow faster traffic to pass.  But be sure you know where the equipment is heading and not to accidentally pass it as it's making a left hand turn.

He says farmers and motorists must be aware of surroundings and that caution must be extended to the roadways that everybody shares.

Jaspers says on-farm grain storage can help a producer market grain when prices are best.  He says the grain can also be stored for feed.

He reminds farmers to never enter a grain bin alone.  He says it can take less than five seconds to become trapped in flowing grain and less than thirty seconds to be fully engulfed.
