SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs says her office, and county auditors across the state, are taking many calls over write-in votes and not voting for candidates or ballot measures.
Krebs says South Dakota state law does not recognize write-in votes. But she says a write-in vote does not disqualify the entire ballot.
Krebs says you can leave some candidate and ballot measures blank if you choose. Again, she says, leaving candidate or measure lines open does not disqualify your entire ballot. She says whatever you mark is counted
She says early voter have noticed how long it's taking to complete a ballot because of the ten ballot issues.
Krebs advises taking the time to be educated about the measures and determine ahead of time how you will vote. She says you can take a sample ballot, or cheat sheet, with you to the polling booth and simply transcribe you marks to the official ballot. She says it will save time.
