SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Sioux Falls Police Department will hire at least six new officers for a February start and the first exam is set for October 24.

Officer Sam Clemens says a change in the process is monthly entrance testing.

Clemens says monthly testing should give more candidates flexibility in coming in to test.  He says it will also allow administrators to keep smaller more up to date lists of candidates.

The hiring process starts by submitting an online application at siouxfalls.org/apply and then completing a civil service exam.

Police Chief Matt Burns says the department "partners with the community to serve, protect and promote quality of life each and every day."

Meanwhile...the Project Blue Light Memorial Event, honoring fallen law enforcement, is tonight at 6:30 at the Empire Mall.

Clemens says Chief Burns and Harrisburg Mayor Julie Burke-Van Luvanee, the originator of Project Blue Light in the area, will attend.

The event will be in the Mall's center atrium near the main north entrance east of the food court.  The Sioux Falls Police Honor Guard and South Dakota Department of Corrections Honor Guard will post the colors to open the ceremony.

Police Chief Matt Burns says every year over 100 officers give their lives in the line of service.
