SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - During today's news conference on methamphetamine, Mayor Mike Huether spoke about decreasing funds to Prairie View Prevention saying other agencies should pitch in.

Huether says the council provided money to the school district to talk about alcohol and drug abuse with students.

The Mayor suggests taking that money and using it towards one thing in a very, very intense way.  He says over the next year talk to student about meth.

Huether proclaimed this week as Meth Awareness Week.

Police Chief Matt Burns says it's clear that methamphetamine abuse is a serious public heath issue and the city is adding another full time member of the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force.

Burns says the head of the Task Force is spending 80 percent of his time on meth cases.

Burns says he'll empower and engage school resource officers to be more communicative than they already are in their schools.  He wants the SRO's to further identify students who are at risk to falling prey to methamphetamine.

Today's briefing on methamphetamine focused on to combat the epidemic.
