SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The distracted driving enforcement effort is four months old now and Sioux Falls police say there's no shortage of violators.

Sergeant Randy Brink says in last week's saturation patrol officer issued 22 citations for driving while texting.

Brink says some offenders deny they were texting saying they were just on the phone.  He says overall the response has been pretty positive considering a texting while driving citation comes with a $95 fine

Brink says texting while driving offenders cross all ages, not just young drivers.  He says many don't realize that texting while at a stop sign or light is illegal too.

The enforcement campaign began in May with the aim of educating drivers when they were stopped about the dangers of texting while driving.

The citation phase began in July and continued this month.  Each month a saturation patrol is held one day to watch for distracted drivers.  The effort will continue in September.

So far, police have made 164 stops, issued 42 citations and 66 warnings since the beginning of the campaign.
