SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- About 24,000 students returned to class Thursday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota's largest school district.

It's only an estimate says the District's DeeAnn Konrad. They'll have firmer numbers in a couple of weeks.

Roosevelt High School has a record number of students this year - about 2,300.

There are at least a couple new programs in the 2018-2019 school year. Konrad says there is a new high school class to teach students about teaching.

"Hopefully we are able to convince some students to enter the field of education," she says there is a great need for qualified teachers.

The computer science immersion program in the elementary school is being expanded into middle school. Konrad says it's now available for 6th graders at McGovern and Whittier.

"by using technology and coding, we are teaching students critical thinking skills and problem-solving.."

As always, the District is at least a few school bus drivers short for the start of a new school year. The slack ought to be tightened up in the months ahead.

Konrad makes a special plea to drivers during morning and afternoon commutes to watch out for all the extra children roaming around, and not only in the school zones.
