SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Call it a small victory in the battle to get people to lock their cars and take their guns.
KELO.com News asked at today's Sioux Falls Police briefing: "Any stolen guns today?"
Sgt. Sean Kooistra replied: "Not in the log today. So that's good. You do bring up a point. That's something that has been coming up. Hopefully, those cases, those calls are going down, because that is very serious, we take that seriously. We certainly don't want those weapons going out into the hands of people who shouldn't have them."
Kooistra says it should not be surprising that criminals would raid unlocked cars for guns.
Also, Kooistra says one of the things the Sioux Falls Police is not doing is cross-checking to see if the owner of a gun stolen from a vehicle also has a concealed carry permit.
Under South Dakota law, unless the gun is in plain sight, in a vehicle, the owner needs a concealed carry permit.
However, Kooistra says they don't want to make more of a hassle for a crime victim.
Plus, Kooistra says it would be hard to prove if the gun was concealed or not when stolen.
