SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) The City of Sioux Falls may consider using inmates to do work around town.
City Council Chair Christine Erickson has seen it work well elsewhere.
"I lived in Pierre and worked in state government for many years there and they often used the women's prison for workers..." Erickson says it may be a great opportunity to collaborate with the county with "low-risk folks."
Councilor Theresa Stehly agrees.
"..Cut tax dollars, save money and also help these people re-enter into the workforce in our community," Stehly says the minimum security inmates could do custodial work, painting, cutting of tree limbs and asphalt work.
The inmate idea came up at budget hearings this week. Mayor Paul TenHaken has proposed a nearly $500 million city budget.
