SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Sioux Falls City Council took public input before voting on the so-called 30-and-3 compromise on public input at council meetings.
One citizen was happy Council was keeping public input at the beginning of the meeting.
"That's why the public should go first. We are here on our own time. We pay for this government. We should be first."
But a woman didn't like the time restrictions.
"...to think you are only going to get three minutes. It's not worth your time to come."
Council went on to unanimously approve the public input changes. Public input will last for a total of just 30 minutes and each speaker will be restricted to just three minutes.
The compromise was worked out between Council and the TenHaken Administration. Before this solution, there was talk of moving public input to the back of the meeting. Council has been trying to balance the importance of allowing citizens to speak with the disruption some speakers have caused.
The new speaking rules take effect later this month.
