UPDATE: Major train derailment reported near Doon, Iowa

FORT WORTH, Texas (KELO.com) -- Burlington Northern Santa Fe has issued a statement regarding the derailment in northwest Iowa.

“At approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning a freight train hauling crude oil derailed approximately 31 cars just south of Doon, Iowa.  BNSF and local authorities are on site coordinating the response and preparing to contain any product that may have been released. There were no injuries. A small number of residents living a half mile from the scene were evacuated. Further updates will be provided when available.”

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KELO.com) -- KELO.com News has received word of a train derailment near Sioux Center, Iowa.

Preliminary reports say 23 cars, part of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, went off the track.

The cars reportedly are tankers. There are unconfirmed reports that the tankers were carrying oil and the derailment is on a river.

The Sioux County Sheriff's Office issued an evacuation order for the derailment area at 6:24 a.m.

"Mandatory Evacuation for residence (sic) of Garfield Ave from 270th and 280th St. due to a train derailment," the department sent via Nixle.

The evacuation area is between Doon and Sioux Center, Iowa.
