SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- It's been a labor of love for City Council Rick Kiley, working toward a State Veterans Cemetery near Sioux Falls.

"This has been, to date, the favorite project I've worked on in my four plus years and I only wish my father were here to see it as well."

Kiley briefs City Council that there's a tight timeline to get the city-owned acreage gifted to the state before the September 1 deadline. That is the date by which the state must make application to the VA. The official ordinance gifting the land in the Slip Up Creek area just north of the city is expected to get its first reading in early July.

Kiley says when you stand on the top of the property, you get a magnificent view of Sioux Falls looking to the south.

This will be South Dakota's first state veterans cemetery.
