'The 20 Percent' solution in fighting the emerald ash borer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- It's like something out of a horror movie.

"They're here!"

South Dakota State University tree expert John Ball says the emerald ash borer menace has just got worse.

"Right now, the adults are starting to emerge," Ball told KELO Radio's It's Your Business this morning. "So that's a big shift. They were in the tree up to this week. Now from this point until about the end of August, the adults are going to be flying."

Ball says the good news is spraying just 20 percent of your ash trees will help keep the pests at bay. He says not every tree has to be treated to protect it from the emerald ash borer.

"What they found in other communities is that about 20 percent of the trees are treated, that actually provides protection to the surrounding trees," Ball said. "Every beetle that attacks from tree to tree dies."
