Milstead says drugs surround us

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Drug addiction isn't just something that happens elsewhere according to Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead.

He says it's all around us.

"The people using these drugs, for instance, meth and heroine, are working in businesses, they're operating equipment, on farms sometimes, they're hired hands, they're moms," Milstead said. "We're losing some of these people."

Milstead says there were 21 fatal drug overdoses last year in the county.

The Sheriff also says that the United States is awash in guns. He says there are 350 million civilian guns in America and only 317 million residents.

Thus, with so many guns, he says gun owners need to help prevent criminals from getting their hands on weapons.

"I think as gun owners, we need to do just a little bit better at trying to be more responsible and keep track where our firearms are," Milstead said.

Milstead says gun owners should use gun safes and lock their vehicles if they have guns in them.

Milstead appeared today on KELO Radio's It's Your Business with Bill Zortman.
