Sioux Falls considers new training complex

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The City of Sioux Falls is considering a new fire and police training facility that could cost up to $28 million.

Fire Rescue Chief Brad Goodroad says the old facility by the airport is showing its age.

"We've had a training tower we've been burning for 40 years here now. Some deferred maintenance. Some issues with access and different things."

Consultants recommend a new multi-acreage facility with life-like buildings - a six story hotel type structure and a residential home, for example - so police and fire could better train for real life scenarios.

Mayor Paul TenHaken and City Council will work to see if there is money available to make this happen. If they can find the funding and everyone agrees, the next step would be to find the land.

Goodroad says the consultants estimate this new facility, depending on what was put into it, would cost somewhere between $20 million and $28 million.
