SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- City Councilor Greg Neitzert says unless there's a "major change in circumstance," don't expect the City of Sioux Falls to support a new downtown baseball stadium.
Neitzert posted his thoughts about the economics of the idea on his Facebook page.
He says the recent consultant report noted that there aren't many other events that can take place in an outdoor venue like a ballpark.
Neitzert says the City is paid a $55,000 per year lease fee by the Canaries.
"This yearly lease fee is significantly lower than it was originally. Years ago the contract was renegotiated to significantly lower the yearly payment because the original payment was a hardship," Neitzert wrote.
He also says City is responsible for the capital improvements and repairs.
"In other words, the taxpayer pays for repairs on the stadium and would be paying for a new stadium if we chose to build one," Neitzert wrote.
He noted that the City currently has one anchor tenant in the current stadium and the City does not collect a significant amount of revenue from the Canaries.
