SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The "Marsy's Law" constitutional amendment voters passed in 2016 has unintended consequences for the crime victims it was supposed to help.
That's according to the Compass Center's Michelle Markgraf. The Compass Center works with victims of domestic abuse.
"What we saw with Marsy's Law was that we were not able to help our victims as much as we had in the past," Markgraf said.
Minneaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead expressed one of the problems law enforcement has had after the passage of the measure.
"If there's a robbery at Sammy's Pizza, we'd like to be able to say that," Milstead said. "We'd like to be able to say where it is and what the name of the business was."
Markgraf, other victim rights advocates, legislators, and law enforcement held a news conference today in Sioux Falls in support of Amendment Y, which would make changes to the measure passed in 2016.
Amendment Y, which makes changes to the amendment passed on November 2016 by voters, is on the June 5 primary ballot.
