SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Today's A-OX Welding Supply fire had a first for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue--they used a sUAV--a drone--to get a birdseye view of the incident.
Division Chief Steve Fessler says they hadn't even had a chance to practice with the drone. He said they called up their contractor and they arrived with the drone, fired it up, and had a perch in the sky.
Fessler said the drone was "very helpful," and helped them not just see the fire from above, but it also helped them position people and equipment to better fight the blaze.
Despite the success of today's use, Fessler says he doesn't see the department getting drones of its own.
