SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The twenty-fifth anniversary today of Gov. George S. Mickelson's state aircraft with seven others aboard also seems like yesterday to two broadcasters who covered it.

Craig Mattick, KWSN brand manager and talk show host, was news director and morning news guy for KKLS in Sioux Falls.

Todd Epp, KELO.com News news director, was the public affairs producer for South Dakota Public TV iun Brookings. He co-anchored SDPTV's and Radio's live coverage of the funeral and related events that week.

Today, the video above first broadcast on Facebook Live, the two veteran journalists remembered that awful day, April 19, 1993.

For Epp, it was also a hometown story as well as a statewide one, as Mickelson and his family had lived in Brookings before Mickelson was elected governor in 1984, as did economic development director Ron Reed, who was also killed.

For Mattick, it was how to deal with one of the most serious stories of his career on a morning show that was built on being funny and lighthearted.

Both said they admired Mickelson and all that he and the others did for South Dakota.
