Cold air hanging around in April

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) – The calendar may say April, but weather seems to be stuck on winter.

Sioux Falls can expect snow starting tonight, through tomorrow with three to five inches possible. On top of the snow, Lance VandenBoogart at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says it looks pretty chilly into the middle of the month.

“As you look to the first week or two of April, the longer term outlooks have us with a fairly high probability of being below average temperatures,” VandenBoogart said. “That’s been true as far as the recent past.  It’s looking like that’s going to continue at least for the first half of April.”

VandenBoogart says a lot of cold air is spilling south from Canada.

“We have a lot of cold air over the eastern part of Canada,” he said. “The set up right now is more late-wintery than early spring. We just have a good amount of cold air up there, and that cold air kind of settles down into the center and eastern part of the U.S. We’re just holding on to winter a little longer this year.”

VandenBoogart says it will take a pattern change to break us out of this cold spell.

“We’re looking for an overall change in the pattern where the jet stream is lining up,” VandenBoogart said. “(We need) to get some warmer south winds into the area rather than these cool, northwest winds.”

VandenBoogart says it also looks like precipitation chances will run above normal for the next couple of weeks.
