PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Tuition will go up slightly at South Dakota's four technical schools.

The State Board of Technical Education has approved a $2 per credit hour increase for 2018-2019. The overall cost per credit hour will be $157.

Most other fees will hold steady.

“The leaders of our state technical institutes recognize the importance of affordability for students,” says Board Executive Director Nick Wendell, “While tuition will go up slightly in 2018-19, the increase adopted by the board today is smaller than has occurred in each of the past five years.”

House Speaker Mark Mickelson of Sioux Falls is pushing a ballot measure to increase the tobacco tax to make tech education in South Dakota more competitive with surrounding states.
