SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- City Councilor Theresa Stehly is circulating a resolution to have the City of Sioux Falls release a 2016 safety audit on Falls Park.

"I'm hoping to find support on the Council to sign it," Stehly told KELO.com News. Stehly needs a second Councilor to sign the resolution so it can be introduced at the April 3, 2018 City Council meeting, she said.

Other media have requested the document following the death of a five-year old Iowa girl at the falls March 18. The City so far has refused to release the 2016 study, conducted after other fatal incidents at the falls.

KELO.com News has requested the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance to release a copy of the report.

The resolution states:

WHEREAS, the City Charter grants the City Council with policy making and investigative authority;

WHEREAS, city officials have referenced an “independent safety audit” of Falls Park following two fatal accidents at the park in 2016;

WHEREAS, the aforementioned report and its recommendations are vital to the City Council in its deliberations as the City of Sioux Falls’ policy making body;

WHEREAS, the City Council values an open, accountable and transparent city government that fosters community engagement and citizen involvement;

WHEREAS, withholding the aforementioned report from public inspection unnecessarily defy these values, and upset the public trust in its city government; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS, SD:

That the City of Sioux Falls immediately release the independent safety audit to the City Council, and make available for public inspection in the office of City Clerk.
