SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The political divide on immigration and other hot button issues was on full display Tuesday night at Sioux Falls City Council.
Before the Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting inclusiveness and diversity in the city, speakers held forth on alleged widespread racism and Islamophobia in town, South Dakota and in Washington.
Kooper Caraway with the Sioux Falls AFL-CIO made it clear.
"Many of the working people in Sioux Falls were alarmed and very concerned about some of the language coming from Pierre, this legislative session, and, to be honest, from Washington D.C., as well." But Caraway did not give specific examples of what concerned him.
Local Immigration Activist Taneeza Islam also spoke.
"Since we've been tracking events of Islamophopia and immigrant refugee bigotry, 14 events have been held here in the city of Sioux Falls." Islam did not specify the events.
President Trump and other Republicans have been outspoken on the necessity of legal immigration and of cleaning up the system, including construction of a wall along the Mexican border. Their opponents, including many Democrats, accuse them of hate and bigotry.
