BRANDON, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Retired Brandon businessman Matt Johnson says he is running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House because he is tired of over-regulation.
"The federal rules and regulations that are made by bureaucrats and not Congress have eroded so many of our freedoms," Johnson says. He adds that compared to 30 or 40 years ago, he doesn't see how farmers can farm any more, because of the additional governmental requirements.
He also says he's for Congressional term limits.
"My approach to getting term limits is going to be to really strongly support a Constitutional convention," Johnson said. "I hope to use my seat in Congress to do that."
Johnson says he's not a career politician, hence the later start--about month before petitions are due Tuesday.
"Anyone entering a race at this point in time is late to the game unless they've been in politics for a long time and have gotten their name out to the public," Johnson said. "Frankly, that doesn't bother me. I think I'll have ample time."
Johnson has events in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen the rest of this week to try to get enough signatures to qualify for the June primary ballot.
Matt Johnson is running against Dusty Johnson, Shantel Krebs, and Neal Tapio for the GOP U.S. House nomination.
