SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) – Sioux Falls can expect up to four inches of snow today, along with freezing drizzle this morning and tonight.
Alex Ferguson of the National Weather Service says the Sioux Falls area will deal with messy driving conditions all day.
“It’s looking kind of messy for your Friday,” Ferguson said. “The big story is going to be the difficult driving today. It is ugly.”
But with the snow and freezing rain mixture, comes something even more bizarre: Thunder Snow. That phenomenon isn’t in the Sioux Falls forecast…yet. Scott Doering of the National Weather Service says Thunder Snow, in which thunder and lightning occurs with winter storms and can lead to intense snowfall rates, is currently in northern Nebraska.
“Getting lightning strikes is kind of unusual for a winter storm,” Doering said. “But this is a dynamic storm system overall.”
