PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The State of South Dakota has issued the following warning about deteriorating conditions in the eastern half of South Dakota from the winter storm.

-----

Officials with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, Department of Public Safety and the South Dakota Highway Patrol are warning motorists that conditions across central and eastern South Dakota are continuing to deteriorate and are asking motorists if they must travel, to do so during daylight hours.

No Travel Advisories are posted on many highways as roadways are snow-packed and icy. Heavy snow and strong winds gusting upwards of 50 mph, are making safe travel nearly impossible.

Winter maintenance continues in areas where it’s safe to do so, but as night falls and winter maintenance activities are suspended, travel will become nearly impossible for the eastern half of the state, especially east of the James River Valley and the I-29 corridor.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning until 6 p.m. CST, Tuesday, March 6, 2018, for several counties in northwestern, north central and central South Dakota. Winter weather warnings and advisories are in place for other areas of the state.

Motorists are encouraged to check conditions at www.safetravelusa.com/sd or by calling 511 before travelling Monday or Tuesday. (Updated 4:50 p.m. 3/5/18)

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The state of South Dakota isn't kidding around about this winter storm.

The Department of Public Safety tweets that they can’t stress this enough: This is NOT a good day to travel in SD.

They say if you must travel, pack a winter safety kit.

Wear your seatbelt.

Let someone know where you are going.

If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

Better yet, the South Dakota Department of public safety says just STAY home!

The winter weather is too severe for many winter weather activities today.

Due to a high-wind advisory and weather forecast issued by the National Weather Service, the City says Great Bear Recreation Park is closed today (Monday) and will reopen as weather permits.

The State of South Dakota issued the following for the Sioux Falls area:

  • The State of South Dakota has advised no travel on the Interstate system around Sioux Falls.   Sioux Falls Police are reporting that roads in the city of Sioux Falls are quickly becoming snow packed and slippery as blowing snow, scattered slippery spots, and snow accumulations are making travel dangerous.  Please use extra caution and remember that braking distances will be compromised.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) - It's raining now, but a major winter storm will be impacting travel around the state, and in some cases, might make vehicle travel next to impossible.

National Weather Service forecaster Aaron Dorn isn't encouraging any travel in the state.

“As soon as we start to mix some snow into that wind blender, it’s going to get really snotty really fast,” Dorn said. “The traveling scenario for today and tonight is, don’t do it.”

Alex Ferguson of the National Weather Service says the snow will continue in Sioux Falls until tomorrow, with Sioux Falls expecting between 3-4 inches.
