SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Like rocker Sammy Hagar, Nick Weiland says his family's Icon Lounge can't drive 55.

55 decibels that is.

"Sixty-five decibels for the last six or so years," Weiland notes about how loud the music could be at the Icon prior to the construction of the Jones Building apartments across the alley. "And when the new Jones Building came in, it went down to 55 decibels, which is no way for the Icon to function at 55 decibels."

Weiland says his family is looking forward to some possible assistance from the City Council in the coming weeks. The Council is scheduled to have a briefing on noise ordinances Tuesday. He says the Icon was there first and no one told the owners that noise threshold would change if an apartment building went in next door.

"The Icon has done more than they really should have to do," Weiland said. "I think they're spending, after you miss a week of concerts, it going to be a $50,000 expense for Icon."

Weiland's family is a co-owner of the venue. His brother Carter is the general manager. Weiland is also running for one of the at-large positions for City Council against incumbent Christine Erickson.

So what happens when someone complains about noise and calls the cops?

Weiland explains.

"(The police) went to the person's apartment and they read the decibels. And it was loud. It was up on that 65 decibel range," he said.

Weiland says a simple solution would be to provide the Jones Building tenants with tripple insulated glass doors on their balconies that face the lounge. In the meantime, the Icon has done additional soundproofing.
