SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Two inmates in the Minnehaha County Jail nearly died this week from opioid overdoses.
The drugs were somehow smuggled into the jail, despite heavy security. County Sheriff Mike Milstead says such tiny quantities are often involved that 100 percent interdiction is tough.
"Where a fatal overdose can be the equivalent of two grains of salt."
Milstead says it was clear that something was wrong with the men in their cells so Narcan was quickly administered.
"Within minutes, I would say, both of these individuals came back from the brink of death." Milstead says this bad story had a good ending, but too many of these stories end badly out in the community since the opioids are so powerful.
Sheriff Milstead says these overdoses happening even in the county jail underscore the severity of the Opioid epidemic.
