STATISTICS: Sioux Falls, Rapid City violent crime rates higher than NYC's

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- According to the 2016 FBI National Crime Statistics, the Rapid City and Sioux Falls metro area had higher violent crime rates than the New York City metro area.

Rapid City had nearly 495 violent crimes per 100,000 population, the highest in the region.

Sioux Falls had just over 388 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

The New York City area had nearly 355 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

The Ames, Iowa metro area had the lowest rate in the region at 162.5 violent crimes per 100,000 population.
